□ Name: Sissy Sullivan
□ Journal: notbadpeople
□ Series: Shame
□ Canon point: post-film
□ History: The film according to wikipedia
□ Personality:
Sissy is the type of girl that gets so caught up in the potential of things that she doesn't realize how her actions won't lead her to that perfect picture she has in her mind. She wants so badly to be loved that she's willing to forfeit most of who she is. It isn't a sense of desperation most of the time, but if pressed, Sissy tends to rely on sex as love even when she knows it isn't.

She's loved for a night, and that's enough to keep her pushing onward. Sissy and Brandon didn't come from a good home. Mostly neglected in their youths or suffering from some sort of abuse, the siblings cope with sex in the same way, though Brandon is a little worse than Sissy. She tends to downward spiral when things don't tend to work out-- and most often its her fault for them not working out.

Take her previous relationship. She dated a man named David who was married and had kids. She claimed she never saw the wedding ring, but knowing Sissy, she just ignored it in hopes that he would love her. That he would dump his wife. Whatever her reasoning, she saw this potential as being so much more than it was.

So she turns to her brother, her only family. Though she's extremely needy and tries to help him (because clearly he has some sort of addiction to sex), but her constant attention makes him pull away. She knows it, too. Unfortunately Sissy doesn't cope well either. We see her sleeping around and drinking a lot.

When her brother goes off at her and refuses to answer her calls (because she's not at all emotionally stable), she decides to try and kill herself. She doesn't see any point if no one loves her or no one wants her. She doesn't have anything. For all that she tries and all that she does, nothing comes to fruition.

Brandon tends to hide his emotions, whereas Sissy is very vocal and very expressive. She is generally fun loving and devoted, but she can latch onto someone and become suffocating for the simple need that she just wants to be wanted. She wants so much actually. This perfect picture she has is really the only thing she has. It's what keeps her motivated. When she realizes that she isn't getting it, that her own brother can't even love her, it's the final straw.

Brandon does come to the conclusion of what is important to him. She does matter, but she's a very broken girl by the end. There's no real character arc with her during the entire time, just something that keeps pushing her over the edge. And when she falls, she falls. She failed in this as well, and while having her brother at her side does mean so much to her, it isn't some magic switch.

The two have enough emotional baggage to fill an airport. She has the potential to be so much better, and she truly is a loving and caring person. What's wrong is her standards and her own insecurity. She's fun loving, and there's an entire scene of her singing Sinatra. She jokes around with her brother, and they have some touching moments. But ultimately it's her need for others and her own life choices that always cause her downfall.
